How Does Netflix Choose Which Shows to Cancel?

Netflix used to renew almost every one of their original shows, but lately, they've been axing some of their fan-favorite shows like The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, GLOW, and Altered Carbon. It leaves viewers with many questions, but the biggest one being: Why? So we go into what factors Netflix looks at when canceling a show.

    Danger ZoneDanger ZonePred 3 dnevi
  • Let me guess, less than 1/2 of the shows can go to season 3? Coz 2 seasons (n thus a dozen of episodes) can allow the analyser to plot a tendency curve.

    SonnenabendSonnenabendPred 4 dnevi
  • so basically all they are saying is nothing will really last more than 2-3 seasons. if lucky 4. for the majority that is. crap way to do things. its why the platform ends up littered with garbage. Netflix Needs to learn quality over quantity.

  • I think one of the biggest issues for shows on Netflix is their release model. Releasing every episode in a season the same day means that each show gets only 2 weeks in the limelight before the next comes along. Almost all other platforms use a weekly release model which keeps people talking about the shows for weeks on end, hence leading to increased viewership over time. Had I realised if I wanted a show to continue I had to watch it in the first month I'd have stated doing this ages ago, but instead I hold off because I'm busy watching other things

  • Among all the services I am subscribed to, Netflix is the most expensive by a lot and also the most expendable. I bet a show like „undone“ would have been cancelled after the first season where on amazon it was renewed. they dont get that quality keeps people subscribed and not just quantity. Everything worth watching and everything really really special gets cancelled and that just pisses me off constantly. Not long and Netflix is cancelled, there is so much other stuff to watch that I really dont need them anymore...

  • This is crazy because I have seen some popular shows get the axe. Now there are some exceptions where it can be explained because there is just disagreement with the original production team and Netflix take Anne with an E for example it was a Netflix that necessarily cost to show to go away it was actually the Canadian producer. Did you see other shells get the chopping block and it just doesn’t make sense I mean they actually had a great comedy one day at a time with a Latino flair to it that was popular and guess what it got cut. Now the show had one season on let’s just say no name cable channel and Next it’s literally coming to CBS this Monday. Anyone who knows anything understands that CBS is where you go to watch comedy. So how do you explain this great show going three seasons on Netflix and then biting the dust. I’m worried of Netflix is eager to get new content out there to hook potential new viewers and getting rid of content that we older subscribers may want.

  • This all lacks a sense of social responsibility, and that's bad for business. They seem to be promoting short term gains over high value, long term behaviors. It can be argued that an audience that draws out their enjoyment is a customer base that has long term interests. In turn, long term interests lead to steady baseline revenue streams, and that produces far more returns over the lifetime of a series. Or a company.

    S McClureS McClurePred 7 dnevi
    • @S McClure I just take a lot of this as bad habits brought on by decades of network television. There they just do their best to reach syndication as that then makes passive income off the investment. So I think audiences and content creators all have to work hard to break free of that. One thing I take umbrage with though is the idea of Netflix having that many bad shows. Like you mention 13 Reasons Why, I don't enjoy that show in the slightest, but I hesitate to call things bad. I don't see why that is any more compulsive than any other show. But with Netflix making shows for so many markets, there are bound to be more shows that don't interest you than ones that do. Because they have this massive global reach, they are generating shows for all sorts of tastes. Most people are only going to like a small band of that content, it doesn't make that content bad.

      Nich HustlerNich HustlerPred 5 dnevi
    • @Nich Hustler Generally I take your point as an egg/chicken problem. Even so, I do disagree with the premise: any group wide trend towards a reduction in viewership can be attributed to many factors, not singularly because of some social tendency. One example: if the focus of development is on short term, high intensity viewership, then you would naturally expect to see that trend as the customer base moves to other, more entertaining platforms. Clearly Netflix has opted not to foster the positive behaviors of a dedicated customer base. By way of further example: they seem to be more interested in preying on the compulsive weaknesses of certain demographics (Cuties and 13 Reasons as a couple of many examples). They signal to their customer base that it's unwise to invest oneself in the fandom of deep and truly insightful storylines that span years. And this signalling is of course lunacy, however profitable.

      S McClureS McClurePred 5 dnevi
    • Uh... Could you please get a leading position at Netflix asap?? 😄

      schakalakadingdongschakalakadingdongPred 5 dnevi
    • @FearedMonster I mean most shows generally lose viewers over time. So it makes more sense to have shorter run series in general while quality and budgets are at their best.

      Nich HustlerNich HustlerPred 6 dnevi
    • Exactly. Not to mention that there are many viewers nowadays that have a "wait and see" approach when it comes to series as a direct response to this type of business model. So they wait until there are some seasons out before committing to the show entirely. More often than not, they find out that the show has already been cancelled/not renewed so why even bother starting to watch then? The whole idea of a show getting better as the seasons come along is slowly dying because there isn't any incentive for us viewers to actually want to watch a show because it might be cancelled right away, which might explain why Netflix has been recently pushing for adaptations of already established IPs to create their content, hoping the already existing fanbase will carry the show forward, like Witcher, Castlevania, Dragon's Dogma or Resident Evil, to name a few. While name recognition might help in some cases, I can see it also having the exact opposite effect. Even though this is anecdotal evidence at best, I have already heard from plenty of people variations of "I haven't played/read The Witcher before so I don't think I'll watch the Netflix show" or "I already watched Walking Dead and the Resident Evil movies, why would I watch the series?".
